The reduction of methaemoglobin by ascorbic acid.

چکیده
In idiopathic methaemoglobinaemia, of which we have investigated'some cases, the occurrence of an atypical form of methaemoglobin' abnormally resistant to reduction has been postulated by Lian, Frumusan & Sassier [1939] as an aetiological factor. It thus became of interest to examine the evidence which has been put forward by Vestling [1942] against the unitary view of methaemoglobin. This author found that methaemoglobin made from haemoglobin by the action of nitrite was much less readily reduced by ascorbic acid than methaemoglobin formed by the action of ferricyanide, and suggested that these two spectroscopically similar products [Austin & Drabkin, 1935] differed chemically. The reaction is also of interest because it has been applied clinically by Deeny, Murdock & Rogan [1943] in the treatment of idiopathic methaemoglobinaemia. The experiments reported here indicate that there is no chemical difference between nitriteand ferricyanide-prepared methaemoglobin, so far as reduction by ascorbic acid is concerned, and that the differences observed by Vestling are due to the presence of ferrocyanide.

Alleviation of Adverse Effects of Copper on Allium cepa L. by Exogenous Ascorbic Acid Application
Abstract In this study ameliorative effects of ascorbic acid (0.5 mM) on onion (Allium cepa L. cv. Red Azarshahr) under copper stress (Cu: 6.5 μM) were studied. Fresh weights of leaves and roots were reduced in seven week old plants under excess copper condition. Cu stress also reduced membrane stability index in leaves. There was a considerable increase in H2O2 content and lipid peroxidation i...
متن کاملEfficacy of Ascorbic Acid in Reduction of Stroke Complications in a Permanent Model of Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion in Male Rats
Background & Aims: Stroke is the third leading cause of death. Oxidative stress has a principal role in the complications of stroke. Due to this fact and the antioxidant effects of ascorbic acid, this study was designed to evaluate the effect of ascorbic acid on reduction of stroke complications in a permanent model of middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion in male rats. Methods: In this experi...
متن کاملThe Effect of Polyvinylpyrrolidone on the Formation of Copper Nanoplates in Wet-Chemical Reduction Method
In this work, we report synthesis and characterization of copper nanoparticles in polymer matrix by wet-chemical reduction method using ascorbic acid as reducing agent, copper (II) sulfate as metal precursor and polyvinylpyrrolidone k-30 (PVP K-30) as surfactant agent. The reaction was carried out in a high-speed stirring mixture at room temperature under nitrogen atmosphere. Characterization o...

متن کاملVolumetric Study Of Dentate Gyrus And CA3 Region In Hippocampus Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats: Effect Of Insulin And Ascorbic Acid
Background and Objectives: Hippocampal volume reduction has been reported in diabetes mellitus type 1. It is believed that hyperglycemia and oxidative stress mediate neuropathological changes in hippocampal neurons. In this study we aimed to study the effect of insulin and an antioxidant like ascorbic acid on preventing volume changes of dentate gyrus and CA3 region of hippocampus. Material...
